Abstract

Inhibitory effects of Gochoonangi roots, stems, and leaves against growth of Helicobacter pylori and its urease activity were examined. All parts of Gochoonangi showed bactericidal activities against H. pylori NCTC 11637, YS 27 and YS 50, with leaves showing highest anti-H. pylori acitivity £Ûminimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 1.05-1.31 §·/mL£Ý againgst all three strains, followed by roots (2.61-4.17 §·/mL). Inhibitory effects of all Gochoonangi parts on H. pylori urease increased dose-dependently (0.79-12.5 §·/mL). At MBCs (3.13 §·/mL), inhibition rates of roots (44.6, 45.8, and 39.7%) and leaves (36.7, 40.2, and 48.7%) on urease activities of H. pylori NCTC 11637, YS 27, and YS 50, respectively, were almost equal, whereas those of stems were slightly lower. These results suggest Ghochoonangi effectively inhibits urease activity of H. pylori and may be a good candiate for controlling H. pylori in vivo.
